Funeral for a Friend

Posted in Uncategorized on October 27, 2015 by Peisithanatos Press

Peisithanatos Press wishes to extend our deepest gratitude to everybody who contributed to the GiveForward campaign that generated the funds needed for Oba Maja’s funeral expenses.  Oba would’ve been blown away by the outpouring of love he’s received from friends, family, and total strangers from across the country. A special shout-out is in order for the incredible Katy Travelstead who spearheaded the campaign to raise funds for Oba’s services.  Katy is a bartender at Pint Pub in Chicago.  We encourage all of our readers to pop in for an ale and tip her well.

Oba’s services will be held on Monday, November 2nd, 2015 at the Lawrence Funeral Home (4800 N. Austin Ave. Chicago, Illinois, 60630) from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM.  Following the visitation, a burial procession will head to Queen of Heaven cemetery where Oba will be interred.

Much of Oba’s poetry dealt with themes of love, hope, gratitude, and cosmic harmony. These weren’t intangible things that he simply wrote about, but qualities that he embodied. The folks who played a part in helping Oba’s family during this difficult time embody those qualities too.  On behalf of Oba and his family, we thank you all.

R.I.P. Oba Maja (1944-2015)

Posted in Uncategorized on October 24, 2015 by Peisithanatos Press

We are deeply saddened to report that Chicago’s Poet Laureate and beloved member of the Peisithanatos Press family, Oba Maja, passed away last week at the age of 71.  Oba was more than just a brilliant poet to us: he was a dear friend, brother, creative collaborator, and source of boundless inspiration.

Friends of Oba’s have set up a GiveForward campaign in order to help raise funds to assist his family in paying for his funerary expenses.  We implore you, our readers and fans, to contribute anything you can to this cause, and to help us spread the word by sharing this post.  Oba loved the city of Chicago and gave everything he had to brighten the lives of the people in it by sharing his poetry on the streets and uplifting the spirits of passersby.  Now is our chance to thank him for the joy and inspiration he brought to the inhabitants of the city by making sure that he gets a proper send-off.

In accordance with the wishes of Oba’s family, Peisithanatos Press will continue with plans to release Oba’s book, “Drops of Rain: The Complete Poems of Oba Maja” in 2016.  100% of the proceeds of the sale from that book will now go to Oba’s immediate family.

“Epitaph for a Circus Clown” — Ernestus Jiminy Chald

Posted in Uncategorized on August 13, 2015 by Peisithanatos Press

Here lie the remains of Buttons the Clown.
His ever-present smile
Is now a permanent frown.
He mounted the slackrope
In his makeup and wig,
And perhaps might’ve lived
If his shoes weren’t so big.
